This Couple Built a HUGE Bed to Share With Their 8 Dogs

Those of us who have pets can easily identify with the situation Chris and Mariesa Hughes found themselves in one night: As the couple prepared for bed, all of their dogs decided to hop up and join them. Sounds familiar, right?

Here’s the catch: they were sharing the bed with seven (count ’em — seven!) rescue dogs at the time. It was for a good cause: They’re the founders of The Mr. Mo Project, a nonprofit that rescues elderly and sick dogs out of shelters where they face a high risk of euthanasia, and places them in “forever” homes.

But after yet another crowded night together, the Hugheses knew they needed to find a solution to their situation and they needed it fast. “At nighttime, all of the dogs want to sleep on the bed and sometimes it becomes too cluttered, and we end up being pushed off of the bed or sleeping on the couch,” Chris Hughes said in an interview with TODAY. “So we built the megabed.”

This “megabed” was designed to measure 13 feet long and 7 feet wide, featuring a headboard that stands 6 feet tall. (Compare that to the average king-size mattress, which measures 6 feet in width and almost 7 feet in length. Wow!)

According to the furniture maker and designer, Mike Ford of Michael’s Custom Interiors, the project took six months to complete. The solid cherry bed features two mattresses, storage space underneath, and built-in stairs for the older dogs who can’t jump as high. “We were so excited to deliver the bed to the family this week and hope they enjoy this custom piece for years to come!” Mike says in a Facebook post. It also has a personal touch — hand-carved paw prints.

And if you’re wondering what the sleeping situation at the Hugheses is nowadays, we are happy to report that there is enough space for everyone to get a good night’s sleep. Just like us humans, all of their eight dogs (yes, there is a new addition to the family) have favorite sleeping positions and it seems like the new bed is just what the big family needed.
