Talking Spring Flower Trends with Ampersand, San Francisco’s Hottest New Floral Studio

How did Ampersand come to be?

Ampersand started from a yearning for a creative life, nature, and everything design oriented. We began the journey of flowering together, and have never turned back. We officially started doing business from our one-bedroom apartment in January 2014, and by August of the same year, we had opened our big barn-door/garage/flower shop and design studio! It’s been the best decision we’ve ever made.

What are you seeing for spring floral trends?
It’s so refreshing to be in sync with nature. Fremontia, lilac, and ranunculus are all in bloom. Combinations of pinks and oranges are big right now, as well as blooming branches!

What are your favorite spring wedding flower trends?
We are really loving the nude and gray tones currently. Creating designs that are muted is a really beautiful spin off of the classic whites and greens wedding concept.

What is the best, and the worst, thing about being your own bosses?

After all the long hours, hard work, and creative energy, we constantly feel the value of our work firsthand since it is appreciated by nearly everyone we work with. The downside of owning a business together is that vacations, sick days, and weekends are a thing of the past (at least right now!). Luckily, we are very fond of one another and like that we get to spend the time together.

What draws you to a particular flower or arrangement?
The most inspiring arrangements are ones that are organic, seasonal, and lush, as if they have just been gathered from a walk. We are also really fond of exploring color combinations.

What is your favorite flower?

Emerson’s favorite flower: ranunculus. Benjamin loves purple flowers of every sort.

What do you strive for with your floral arrangements?
The ultimate goal is to add to a space without feeling a like a sore thumb. Just enough drama, beauty, and attention without stealing the limelight from the overall space, event, or occasion.
