“Sun” Glasses

This summer is a scorcher. What better way to motivate children to protect their eyes than letting them make their own sunglasses? It’s a fun and frugal way to encourage your children to stay safe this summer.

Materials:

  • card stock
  • markers or paint
  • scissors
  • tape
  • glue
  • cellophane paper or acetate cutouts

Instructions

  1. outlineDiscuss with your child a design they would like for their glasses. My son is crazy about rockets right now, so we chose to make “rocket glasses.” Any shape you can come up with will work. (Keep in mind, I am NOT an artist, but here is our design.)
  2. Draw your design on card stock and have your child color and decorate the glasses BEFORE you cut them out.
  3. Tape the sides to the eyepieces. You could also add plastic wrap to the eyepieces to make them appear more like glasses!
  4. coloring

To make these “sun” glasses, cut the cellophane paper to make the lenses. Make sure to measure against the eyeholes of your frame. On the back of your glasses, apply glue around the eyeholes and stick on the cellophane lenses. Wait for the glue to dry before wearing your new pair of “sun” glasses!

    Steps for Taking It Further:

Language Arts: Have your child “read” the room with their new glasses. They can wear their glasses to find letters, spot words you’ve hidden or pick out objects around the house and create a story using them!

smilingMath: Have your child measure their head to make sure the eyepieces of the glasses will be the correct length/size when they are making the craft.

Science: Discuss the reason we need sunglasses (sun UV protection) and do some experiments with the sun.
