Spring Kings and Queens

spring crown 1

Spring has finally sprung! Although some of us have gotten a little snow lately, we certainly can see the green grass poking through. Do you know what that means? It’s time for your kids to get ready to rule their outdoor kingdom! Making a crown out of a paper bag is a great way to recycle and reel in the spring season.

Materials:

  • paper bag
  • scissors
  • glitter (optional)
  • school glue
  • paintbrush
  • colored tissue paper or party streamers
  • hole puncher
  • yarn

Instructions

  1. spring crown 3Cut a strip of paper bag the entire length of the bag and about 4 or 5 inches wide. Next, cut one long edge of the rectangular strip into triangle “mountains” to form your crown shape. NOTE: the crown will be tied at both ends with yarn to fit your head.

  2. Tear the tissue or crepe paper streamers into tiny squares and then crumple into balls. This part is fun for the whole family and can become a crafting, paper-scrunching activity!

  4. Using your school glue, begin gluing the paper balls you’ve made onto your paper bag. If your bag has writing on it, glue the paper to that side and cover the writing. You can glue the colored paper in any pattern you wish. We made two rows: one of gold paper and one of pink.

  5. spring crown 5Next, pour some school glue into a shallow container and using a paintbrush, paint the glue onto the pointed tips of the “mountains” you cut out. Sprinkle glitter all over the area painted with glue. We glued paper balls to the bottom of the crown, then glittered the tips. Shake the glitter off and allow to dry.

  6. spring crown 6Once your crown is dry, punch a hole in each short end of the rectangle, then thread some yarn through. Tie the yarn ends together to form the crown shape, or leave them loose and tie around your head for a perfect fit!

Ta da! Now you’re all set to go forth and rule the spring outdoors. Happy spring, everyone! You rule!
