New Year’s Kids’ Craft: Champagne Cork Soldiers

Cork Maccabees Two

You would be amazed at how easy it is to buy a big box of Champagne corks on eBay — or, if you prefer, you can start saving up your own! Wine corks work well too, but Champagne corks have a more humanlike shape.

Step 1:

Select a cork. Cut a small square of felt approximately 1 by 2 inches. Wrap around the cork and secure with glue stick.

Step 2:

Make the face! Glue on googly eyes and draw the rest of the features with a black permanent marker. To top it off, make a hat — it’s as easy as cutting a small circle of felt and gluing it to the top of the cork.

Step 3:

Make the body and accessories. To make the arms, cut and twist pipe cleaners and attach them by poking them into the cork. You can also use pushpins for the arms if you do not have any pipe cleaners handy. If you happen to have the metal top of the Champagne cork, you can attach this as a little shield. If not, you can use a large button covered in tinfoil.

This project is lots of fun, and it really lets the kids get creative. They can decorate their soldier any way they like! Look around the house for items like small buttons, sequins, yarn, tissue paper, and pom-poms. These are all great decorations to add to a cork soldier. Before you know it, they may form a whole army!
