Carolyn Denham and Roderick Field launched Merchant & Mills in 2010 to bring the craftsmanship and care of couture to the masses through utilitarian sewing projects. The haberdashery, located in South East England, sells needles, scissors, sewing notions, fabric, and patterns.

The duo’s first book, “Merchant & Mills Sewing Book” (Chronicle, $24.95) includes both hand- and machine-sewing techniques and 15 projects to satisfy your desire to create … beautifully.

The projects in the book include detailed illustrations that make it easy for even novice sewers to follow along. See for yourself with this excerpted project: the Maker’s Apron.
