In this week’s Crafts for Kids video, learn how to make a DIY Lava Lamp using household supplies! This activity is not only a feast for the eyes but also a terrific science experiment. As you make the lamp, talk to your kids about why the oil stays on top of the water. What does the word density mean? When parents drop the Alka-Selzer tablets into the water and oil mixture why do bubbles float to the surface? What are gases?
Materials:
- empty jars or plastic bottles
- water
- cooking oil
- food coloring
- Alka-Selzer tablets
- a spoon
Instructions
Fill a clean and empty jar or plastic bottle with water about a third of the way full.
Once you have water in the jar, add a few drops of food coloring and stir.
Add cooking oil until you almost reach the top of the jar. Allow the water and oil to settle into place a little.
Break an Alka-Selzer tablet into four pieces then drop each piece, one at a time, into the jar. Watch what happens! Notice the bubbles that rise to the top? Why do the bubbles push through to the surface?
