DIY Binoculars: Video

Binoculars are the most important tool for bird watching, an outdoor activity that is great for helping kids learn more about nature as they try to spot and identify birds. But younger children may not be ready for an actual pair of binoculars so making some of their own will encourage imaginary play. To make these binoculars, you will transform a pair of toilet paper rolls by using a little duct tape and some imagination! Then venture outdoors and pretend you are birding. Did you hear any bird songs? What birds did you see?

  • 3 toilet paper rolls
  • hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • hole puncher
  • black yarn
  • scissors
  • black duct tape

    1. Step2Cover 2 toilet paper rolls with black duct tape.
    2. Step 3Cut off a small section from the 3rd paper roll and cover it with tape too.
    3. Step 4Using hot glue, glue the small section in between the 2 rolls then secure in place with some additional duct tape. Hot glue does not hold very well on on the slick surface of duct tape so the additional tape in this step is important.
    4. Step 5Punch holes in the sides of the binoculars (the side you look through) and tie on a strap made from yarn.Binoculars finished
