Trees and shrubs (“woody” plants) are the four-seasons backbone of the landscape. This garden displays small shrubs among three ‘Royalty’ crabapple trees. The crabapples have much to offer: crimson flowers in spring, tiny ornamental fruits in fall and winter, and purple foliage throughout the growing season. An evergreen, blooming groundcover of vinca blankets the foreground. The daffodils are optional. Plant in a sunny exposure. For all its beauty, this garden requires very little input from the gardener-it’s truly low-maintenance. The choice of alternative trees will change the character of the garden. Upright forms, such as the crabapple or beech, give the garden a regal feeling. The broader, informal growth habit of redbuds lends the more natural look of a woodland garden. A multiple-trunked tree may be used in the corner of the planting rather than three separate trees.
